- The Secular Franciscan Order is an order within the Catholic Church open to all men and women who desire to follow Jesus Christ in the footsteps of Saint Francis of Assisi.
- The OFS (formerly The Third Order) was started by Saint Francis 800 years ago for people who wanted to live a fuller Gospel life.
- Members of the OFS are now found in many countries of the world and their number (in excess of 400,000) is made up of all kinds of people, both married and single.
- After a time of prayer and preparation individuals make a lifelong commitment to a Rule approved by the Holy Father.
Extracts from the Secular Franciscan Rule:
- “Secular Franciscans should devote themselves to the careful reading of the Gospel, going from Gospel to life and from life to the Gospel.” (4)
- “Secular Franciscans should seek to encounter the living and active person of Christ in their brothers and sisters…” (5)
- “Let them participate in the sacramental life of the Church, above all the Eucharist.” (8)
- “In their family they should cultivate the Franciscan spirit of peace, fidelity and respect for life…” (17)
- For over 20 years a small group of Secular Franciscans have been meeting together in the San Damiano Fraternity, in Inverness.
